Garage door won't close? 6 common causes and fixes
Most of the time a garage door that won't close has a simple cause. Here are the six we see most often, and which ones you can fix yourself.

A garage door that won't close is stressful, especially at night. The good news: the cause is often simple. Here are the six problems we see most, starting with the easiest to fix.
1. Blocked or dirty safety sensors
The two small sensors near the floor on either side of the door must see each other. A leaf, a spider web, a dirty lens or a bumped bracket will stop the door from closing, or make it reverse. Wipe both lenses and check that the lights on both sensors are steady.
2. Misaligned sensors
If one sensor light is blinking, the sensors aren't lined up. Gently loosen the bracket, line it up until the light stays steady, and tighten it again.
3. Something in the way
Check the tracks and the floor under the door for objects, ice or debris. In winter, ice at the bottom can freeze the seal to the ground.
4. The lock button is on
Many wall panels have a lock or vacation button that disables remotes. If the wall button works but the remote doesn't, check the lock.
5. Opener limit or force settings
If the door touches the floor and goes back up, the opener's travel limit or force setting may need adjusting. This is a quick fix for a technician.
6. Broken spring or cable
If the door is crooked, a cable is hanging loose, or you heard a loud bang, stop. These parts are under high tension. Unplug the opener and call a technician.
